Updated: Jan 9
Not sure what to do after an Accident? Let us help you with your Next Steps.
You’re driving down the highway on a quiet Sunday afternoon. Traffic slows, there is construction up head. You slightly hit your brakes to transition from 60 mph down to 50, then down to 40, and BAM! You hear crushing metal, feel your car shake uncontrollably, and you fly back and forth in your seat. Seconds seem to go slow-mo like a scene out of a movie and the world is blurry. Suddenly you snap back into reality and realize that YOU have JUST been REARENDED. Cops, Paramedics, passer byers are everywhere as statements are taken and the wreckage is cleared. You return home, from the emergency room, later that night, only to realize you have no idea what to do next? Well no problem we have you covered! We’ve listed 4 steps to help walk you through the mechanical repair process and the body repair process. Wait! I just said mechanical repair. Yes, that’s right. Often folks forget that damage to your mechanical components can happen and It is our first instinct to only think about the exterior body damage so let’s get started:
Step 1: Get an Estimate
Come in to Nichols Auto Repair in Wheat Ridge, Colorado and obtain an estimate for both the mechanical repairs and the auto body repairs. Using an independent mechanic shop like Nichols that completes collision repair will ensure you get a true estimate of what it will cost the insurance carrier to have your car fixed using quality paint, quality mechanical and body parts, and especially quality labor.
Here are a few questions to ask during the estimate process:
What kind of parts are included in the estimate? Are the parts:
OEM – Original Equipment Manufactured parts
Aftermarket Parts - Quality new parts that use OEM specifications
Recycled Parts - Parts from a auto recycler. These parts should only be used if OEM or Aftermarket parts are not available.
Have you repaired cars of my make and model before?
How long will the repair take?
What happens if additional damage is found after the repairs begin?
Step 2: Secure a Car Rental and Schedule the Repair
The responsible party’s insurance carrier will usually cover a rental car. Work with the rental car company and the mechanic shop to coordinate picking up the rental car and the drop off, of your car for repairs.
Step 3: Your Vehicle is Repaired
There are 3 main phases of the repair process. Tear Down, Parts Ordering, Repair. Let’s discuss what happens during these steps.
a. Tear Down - Once the vehicle is at Nichols Auto Repair their mechanics will begin to tear down the damaged parts of the vehicle to reveal any damage that was not initially visible. They will work with the claims adjuster to have any additional damage inspected and included as part of your claim.
b. Parts Ordering – Parts specific to your vehicle will be ordered if the parts are not in stock.
c. Repair – Nichols skilled ASE certified mechanics and auto body technicians will complete all repairs within the timeframe quoted.
Step 4: Payment and Pickup
The responsible party’s insurance carrier will work with you to determine how the automotive repair shop will be paid. Most often insurance companies will pay the repair shop directly through a check or credit card. The alternative is that the insurance company will write you a check and you will pay the repair shop the agreed priced at the time of pick up and you will be on your way with a newly restored vehicle!
